The sea turtle protection society of Greece was founded in 1983 as a non-profil organisation to study and protect sea turtles through beach monitoring and management at the most important Loggerhead nesting areas in Greece (Zakynthos, Peloponnesus and Crete), public awareless, enviromental aducation, rehabilitation and interaction with fisheries. ARCHELON was instrumental in the creation, on the island of Zakynthos, of the first national matine park for turtle in the Medeterranean.

About the sea turtle
Sea turtle have lived on our planet for over 150 million years.Today they face extiction. At sea, turtles are hit by speedboats, become entangled in nets, ingest fishing hooks (and other forein material) and are also deliberately inqured by humans. Nesting beaches are being redused mainly due to increasing tourist development.
Tree species are regularly found in the Mediterranean : the Loggerhead (Caretta Caretta), the Green (Chelonia mydas) and the Leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea). The above species are also found in Greek waters but only Loggerhead turtles nest in Greece.
