Best view: Santorini
June 21, 2011
Santorini nominated the best view Greek island according to Guardian newspaper.
The ancient island of Thira exploded in 1500BC, leaving a broken rim of a now-extinct volcano. The town of Fira sits on the top of the rim looking west, with an almost sheer drop of 250m to a very deep blue sea whose bed rapidly plummets to a depth of 350m. This is where almost every Greek postcard is shot, and with good reason. The air is pretty special too, and it is just about the only other thing on the island that does not cost a fortune.
