SANTORINI
SANTORINI
5 ISLANDS COMPLEX
Santorini is a group of 5 islands:
The main island Thera (75,8 km2, ca. 8000 inhabitants)
Therasia (9,3 km2, ca. 250 inhabitants)
Aspronisi (0,1 km2, uninhabited)
Palea Kameni (0,5 km2, 1 inhabitant)
Nea Kameni (3,4 km2, uninhabited)
It is the most southeast island of the Cyclades. Before 1500 BC this was one island, called Stroggili, with an active volcano in the middle.
Santorini covers 132 square Kilometers and is located 127 nautical miles from the port of Piraeus to the SSE.
About 1640 BC, the volcano erupted, a huge crater was created; then the sea rushed in to fill the crater and the three modern islands remained. (Experts estimate that a tidal wave about 100 m high resulted from this eruption; this tidal wave did major damage to the north coast of Crete.)
