Being a first time trip and realizing may be the last I researched the hotels on the island to death!!! I ended up picking the Phenix even though I had a few reservations after reading a couple average reviews. But I noted that the reviews were over a year old and a more recent one was very positive so I went for it. I have no regrets whatsoever! The view was sensational, the owner and bartender were as friendly as can be - we even went out on the town (Fira) one night ( me, my girlfriend and Yanis and Eddy ). We had a blast. But I digress....its the hotel you are interested in. We went mid june so it was a good time in that the weather was great and the island was in either "low" season or "mid" season ( some split the year into low, mid and high while other places do just a low and high season. The high is usually beginning of July across the board) Anyway, as I scootered across the the entire island I saw practically every hotel I researhed online and found myself repeatedly saying "I'm glad I didn't pick that one". Sure their interiors were nice ( probably...they were in the photos online) and maybe even had a nice view but some were really in the middle of nowhere or in the middle of everywhere. The Phenix is just right. Theres a local market and a bus stop and a small village yet close enough to Fira to walk the scenic pathway past other hotels in about 15 minutes. Its further from the beaches but the beach area hotels are the "middle of nowhere" places I talk about. We opted for a view over the beach but found the beaches easily accessable by ATV. Unlike Bermuda or some other places you NEED a motorcycle license as well as an international drivers license to rent a scooter but not an ATV. I prefered the ATV because some terrain was a bit rough for a scooter. 5 stars from me
