My husband and I visited Santorini in mid July 2005. We had booked a 2 day stay at Hotel Galini in Firostefani on the caldera. We had a balcony view overlooking the Aegean and it was truly a magical sight both in daytime and glorious at sunset. We took the old venetian pathway toward Fira and stopped along the way to visit the museum of prehistoric Thera which houses magnificient wall paintings, pottery, vases, and finds from the excavations at Akrotiri. Walking along this pathway you can see where the donkey and cable car paths are as well as an occasional ferry boat.
There are many beautiful churches on the island in white with royal blue roofs. Most of the houses are perched on the caldera at various levels and there are shops and restaurants where you can have authentic Greek food and enjoy the stunning view of the blue sea. We had our last dinner on the island at a delightful restaurant that was all aglow with white lights and greenery. It had 2 floors and the top balcony was the best view for romance seekers. If you go, you will need to reserve a table as it is very popular.
We enjoyed a Greek salad and Moussaka with a toast of the local wine of Santorini.
Our trip came to an end too soon, the weather was in the mid to upper 70's and no rain. The captivating views of the Aegean and the yellow moonlight streaking across the water as the sun went down is a sight I will carry with me always.
I hope someday to return. If you go, I know you'll have a wonderful time as we did. If you have the time to spend a week or two, there are many bus and boat tours you can take to see all the points of interest. We departed this magical place by taking the highspeed ferry which took about 5 hours to reach Pireaus.
