Santorini volcano island is a perfect place for exploring volcanic activities. The best way to understand this many colored layers of rock is to take part in one of the guided trips with geologists. The volcanologist Dr.Tom Pfeiffer and his partner organize walking and geological trips to Santorini. More informations you can find on their homepage http://www.volcanodiscovery.com. Also it is recommended to get the great guide & book about Santorini "Fire in the sea" by Walter Friedrich and the geological guide of Georges Voujoukalakis that you can find in the central library in Thira. Of course you can walk yourselfe on Santorini even there are no marked walking paths yet. The wellknown route from Thira to Ia is something special. But there are many other places on that island that you can find yourselfe and where you do not meet mass-tourism! The best time for travelling to Santorini is spring and late autumn.

Definately take an all day boat trip that includes the volcano (you will be charged a euro to hike to the top). The hike is uphill on black rock and is hot -really hot in the summer! Take water, wear tennis shoes, not flip flops, and plan on your shoes getting dirty-not a walk for white tennies. There are little wisps of steam escaping at the summit, and the view is spectacular! You will get to experience a dip in some volcano warmed water on the other side of the island afterward, then on to Thirasia or Oia or Fira, depending on which tour you choose. Beautiful trip!
